How the heck do I remove the gear knob so that I can replace gaiter??
#1
Hi Guys....The gear change gaiter has split on my 2009 Berlingo Multi space,  try as I might I cannot get the gear change knob to move. Not wishing to cause more damage would really appreciate some enlightened Forum member to talk me though it, many thanks Caskin Confused

Solved it, you take it firmly in hand and pull hard upwards, the knob plus gaiter ,plus surround housing will all come off together,do be careful as housing which is quite large fits in place by plastic sprung loaded clips.
You then remove housing from gear shift by undoing clips holding gaiter to housing.
Next trick is to turn gaiter inside out and cut tie wrap to finally remove.
Replacement is a reverse but you have to cut slits in replacement to correspond with holding clips on surround, just time consuming.

Not me though, I don't have a gear stick (auto!).

I found it useful, thanks Caskin. You're right, it's a hard pull to get the knob off, so without knowing how you had done it I'd have been a bit shy of using that effort in case I was going to break something. The replacement gaiter I got from Amazon for a fiver, looks very smart. And the slits were precut so fitting was quite easy.

I also used your advice to yank the blighter off, Although i did have some issues with the relacment gaiter bought off ebay, real leather thicker than original and slits cut in wrong place, was pig of a job. geve up in the enr refitted the old one

Replacing gaiter tip: when you tighten the cable-tie around the gaiter and gear-stick ensure that the lump in the cable-tie is at the bottom because if its at the top you will feel it with your finger-tips when your hand is on the gear-knob.

Yes, as daft as it sounds the gear knob is a force off, force on item. Lots of waggling and wrenching involved!
