1.6hdi vs 2.0hdi, what to look for in general?
#1
After a spectacular mot failure on my small runabout I've decided rather than pay the eye watering bill to get it through its better to spend the cash on an an older (03-06ish) berlingo in desire trim. Good mpg and lower tax are my main requirements and it looks like the 1.6hdi is best with the 2.0hdi ever so slightly higher on both counts.

Can anyone give me any advice on either, whether one engine is preferable over the other for issues like reliability, home servicing etc.

In general when looking at a berlingo desire what points should I look for?

I'm down in Cornwall and it's looking like I'm going to have to travel far to find one so I need to keep my options as wide as poss hence the question on both engine sizes.

Hi Gav welcome to the forum, the 2.0 is strong as an ox and looked after will do big mileage just use a little more fuel than the 1.6hdi. The 1.6 is a good engine you must keep on top of servicing and look for a good regular service schedule using the correct oil as a must. Then its just down to condition of the vehicle really they don't rust check the back axle for wheels leaning in at the top as this can be bearing failure in the stub axles and its easier to replace the whole axle than try to change bearings. As with any motor you buy check everything works as it should a desire usually has air con so check and factor in a lube and regas. Look out for strange things happening to the electrics. Low mileage 2.0 do come up its just a matter of searching them out but don't be put of by the scare stories about the 1.6hdi turbo failures just do your checks and find a good one they are great to drive on the torque curve and you can get 60+ mpg from them.
Good luck let us know how you get on.
