Dead BSI unit?
#1
I'm trying to repair a 2003 hdi. When the battery is connected, the headlights come on. There's no diesel heater light and the engine won't start. Also the hazards/indicators/wipers/radio controls don't work. oh and the odometer display is dead.
Occasionally it'll fix itself and can be driven. But then it goes wrong again.

A 'specialist' advised to replace the steering wheel stalk unit (basically all the steering wheel controls in one go). That didn't work.

Any ideas?

There may be water getting in to the bsi have a look in the scuttle tray where the wiper's go into the body they can get blocked with leave's and crud and will not drain properly over flow and water get's in to the bsi if so the bsi will just need drying out if your lucky .

First check water ingress like Jed mentioned. That year is known for that issue. Second check wires going to fuse box
in engine bay. Wires tend to rub against inner wing and brake down.
Also Lexia reading errors would help.

Thank you, this was exactly the problem. Lumps of leaves and dirt stuck there now removed and a bit of contact cleaner on the bis, but the problem hasn't gone away. Going to try and clean the bsi a bit more thoroughly. If that doesn't work i guess it needs a new one

Update..

I took the bsi out and stripped/cleaned/resoldered it. There was water/mould residue but nothing that bad. However it still doesn't work.

As soon as the battery is connected, the dash clocks and headlights come on (even without the key in), and when the ignition is turned on there's no heater light. Also stuff like the indicators don't work.

That is dried residue. You can't know how much water was there.
and if water made short circuit.

How did you resolder ? Hot air ?

Probably damaged by water. You can try BBA reman...

How do you solder with air? I use a soldering iron

I tried BBa, but they're quite expensive. Around £200 for a replacement bsi. Whereas I could get a bis/ecu/key from ebay for half the price

Update

Have swapped the ecu, bsi, key and transponder. I managed to find the same make/number of ecu, so it was all a straigforward swapout.
Now everything works except there's no glow plug light and the engine won't start.

Any ideas?
