Wonky rear wheel

That will work to an extent but if you want even wear on the rear tyres they need to be turned on the rim.

A tyre fitting place should turn a tyre for the same price or maybe less than a puncture repair, and if it doubles the life of the tyre it's worth it.

Why do I have to replace the rear axel can it not be fixed. I have seen a company selling reconditioned axels but they want my axel sent to them as part of the deal. Surely they are just going to fix it?

Isn't that what I need to do. And bearings are £20.

Sorry if I'm being an idiot I don't really know what I'm doing but I always have a go before going to garage.

Rember his a mechanic, with all the gear, and customer is paying the the bill,in the long run its easyer and cheaper to replace the axle, bet your boots if one side is gone the other side won't be long before that needs replacing, and then the torsion bars won't be off need replacing. These tend to snap!!,,this adds up to a lot of garage labour, but if you can do it your self good luck, everything will be rusted solid!,,

The Russian guys have the right idea, they modify the rear arms and fit wider bearings that will last a lot longer than the crappy standard bearings.

Worth watching the video....   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnF0Ut2GNJQ

Looks easy enough. I've got all the tools. What's the chance of the tension bar bending. I've never been to a garage to have a car fixed always tried my self and done it with help of YouTube videos. I just hate paying 300 for a van I paid 200 for.. I'm by no means a mechanic. But I'm handy enough.

What do you mean by  "the tension bar" ?

There's a few videos on you tube of people fitting the different bearings, unfortunately they are all in Russian (I think) so you have to figure it out by watching.

The rear arms appear to be modified by welding a ring to one end to house the shaft seal, the blanking plate being on the other end.

Knocking the mounts off each end of the axle tube to replace the pins looks a bit hard work.

If it's not too far gone they will fix it. In the video with the Irish guy one of the stub axles is knackered so he has a suitable replacement handy, what were the chances of that ? The torsion bars are also cut off so he's going to have to replace them as well. The Russian video shows him knocking the torsion bars out of a nearly new axle not a 12 year old solid lump of rust like yours or mine is going to be. I like doing my own repairs but I can see the point of swapping an axle like for like rather than take the axle off and stripping it to find out what I need then finding it is not a viable repair and having to look for a replacement with no transport. It turns a bargain £200 van into a lump of metal stuck on the yard for a month waiting for bits to turn up.
So where does this bit go then ?

I see your point ffrenchie and like you say in most cases it's easier to just fit a recon axle for various reasons.

However the "Russian modification" has me interested, the bearings they use are a lot sturdier than the standard bearings which in all honesty are very poor. I think once fitted the bigger bearings would be there for life, especially as they have grease points fitted.

It would be an interesting modification to try especially if you had an old axle to work on so no pressure to get it done in a hurry.
