Wonky rear wheel
#1
Hi guys my rear passenger wheel looks like the bottom is out further than the top. The axel is fine and I've tried the brake pads, they are good. What else could it be. Just that 1 tyre has gone bald on the inside over 6 months. Also Ive hit a speed bump a bit hard 2 or 3 times then for a short period there is a very loud creeking  from the same wheel. Once the noise appears I get out and bounce the back to try pin point it but it doesn't make any noise until I drive over bumps. The noise goes after a day or 2. Any ideas why the wheel doesn't look straight and is this noise anything to worry about or related to the wonky wheel. I like to try fix my self just need to know what needs fixing

The axle bearings are knackered.

You can get a reconditioned rear axle for about £300.

The bearings are rubbish and don't last, look on you tube and you will find lots of Russian videos of how they replace them with bigger stronger bearings.

I wish I understood Russian.....   Sad

Thanks jj9. How long will it last if I drive like it is. I only paid 200 for the van don't wanna spend 300 on a part. What's the worse that can happen if I drive as is.

Also i have a r reg citroen zx in the garage. My first car had some great fun in it so never wanted to scrap for 50 quid. Would the axel off this fit my 02 berlingo. Ive been lucky so far a few parts have fitted perfectly

The wheel could lean till the tyre starts touching the inner wheel arch. You could get pulled for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition. How much test has it got left ? It's not going to pass another with the bearing collapsed. Try scrapyards for an axle if the rest of the van is sound.
So where does this bit go then ?

No it's a different back axle bud, 405 or berlingo/partner will fit, the latter being a better chance of being in better nick

Mot til june. It passed the last 1 with the same issue. My Bro said it looked a bit off before mot and I seen another berlingo with the same wheel at same angle so assumed it was OK. Only now the tyres gone a bit bald on inside so I'm guessing it's not to bad yet. That ks for the help guys. My mates got a ber lingo up his yard I'll c what he'll do for me.

I ran a ZX for 4 years with a knackered axle, but it passed the MOT's with no problem, so I suppose it depends on how strict the tester is.

Most or the mk1 & 2 berlingos I've seen have leaning wheels to some extent.

When I went for mot last time he raised the van to inspect the wheels and couldn't work out why the wheels wouldn't turn had to ask one of the mechanics. Hand brake was on. And he's the owner of the garage. He's getting on now but he's always been lenient. I'll stick with this van only paid 200 so don't wanna spend 300 on a part. It's taken 6 months and 10,000 miles to go bald so don't think it's too bad. Thanks again guys

If the tyres fitted aren't directional you can double the life of them by taking them off the rim and turning them so the outside edge is on the inside and vice-versa.

Just rotate the tyres around the vehicle to share the wear on each wheel ... turning a tyre costs money ...
