[Engine] Seized Diesel Injectors = a worry when buying a car??
#1
(I have changed to subject line and edited the text of this first post so as to be more concise)

OK, a 2005 2.0Ltr HDI motor with 114K on the clock.

I have come across some real horror stories about faulty injectors that cannot be removed from the head because of corrosion (or summat) resulting in the motor being pretty much a write off.

From what I have just been reading, this seems a not uncommon issue on this motor and now this has me somewhat scared of buying one. (and I was going to look at this car tomorrow).

Can anyone give me any further info on this issue please?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm getting pretty flummoxed with all the things I have to consider.
I'm also aware that I have been "banging on", a lot, asking al kinds of questions about what version might be best to buy, that my posts might be getting considered excessive re this = sorry  Blush
I just don't want to make an expensive mistake that I won't be able to afford.
P.S. = My other half is suggesting I consider going for the 1.6 Petrol option just so as to avoid this. Reason being I simply could not afford that sort of bill should the worst happen.
P.P.S. = I am right now researching this on this forum.
hi john ive a 2004 2.0 hdi desire, ive had it for just over 4 years now. just had it mot straight through thats 4 years on a trot. i had the cambelt kit and water pump done last year cost around 320. get the bottom pully checked at the same time. ive not heard much about the injectors getting stuck in the head.ive heard about them leaking and need tightning up though. i find this car to be a great little thing ive had LOTS of cars in the past some quite fancy, if this one was to give up the ghost i would be looking for another . it would have to be another 2.0 hdi as the go very well and will do 45-50 to the gallon.
good luck with your search whatever way you go.
Thanks for the input landcrab Wink
My research over the last 30 minutes or so is leading my to the fact that the 1.9 "XUD" engine (non turbo), whilst a bit agricultural, does not suffer from this and is hugely reliable.
Decisions decisions...............
ive known people with 1.9 and as you say they are a bit agricultural. .good motors but slow and not that great on mpg.
Stuck injectors seem to be a common symptom on modern diesels, not just citroen motors.
The Renault unit used in Vivaro, traffic and various Nissan including the newer XTrails are well known for it.
Probably easily avoided by the use of copaslip or the likes during factory assembly but surprisingly its not used !!
Stuck injectors can usually be removed using specialist hydraulic extractors (unfortunately at a specialist price) but can still end up snapping !
Your 2005 will not or should not be a XUD , they were succeeded by the DW8 and the DW8B around 2000/1.
They are a development of the XUD and are more dependable, economical and greener pollution wise.
Thank you, you are of course correct. As pointed out further up, an average of about 40 mpg and only 70 bhp isn't very appealing though is it. Might as well go for a 1.6 Petrol, only slightly less mpg but with cheaper fuel it becomes more attractive. EDIT = except petrol ones in the "Desire" trim, with a Modutop, seem pretty rare !!
Save me reading all your posts ......
So what do you need from a Berlingo ??
What sort of use will it have ? mileage ? carrying ? local stop start ? longer runs ?
Needs define the vehicle as of course does money .......................
Reliability - and hopefully no expensive engine issues on my horizon (hence the post about seized in injectors)
A Modutop roof.
Good mpg
Your usual aprox 10K a year type mileage envisaged.
Carrying no heavy loads, mostly domestic use with occasional "day van" style camping (hence the Modutop)
Not much in the way of local stop start. Commute to work = 12 miles each way.
Longer runs (= 50+ miles) only occasional, maybe once a month.
If turbo, I am aware of going gently until warm, and letting it cool for a minute or two when good and hot.
Money = 2K max, preferably nearer to 1.5K
Re possible big bills, although many say a 1.6HDi is fine, at my budget the mileage will be high-ish so I think I prefer not to go 1.6HDi
Thank you in advance SO MUCH for your input.
I very much look forward to helping others with electrics and camper subjects, rather than just mithering folk !!
