Disable EGR ??

Read various opinions on disabling the EGR valve , Good idea ? 
I have my 02 DW8 in the garage at the moment for a few jobs, none related to the ERG which presumably works fine.
Would it be worth asking the mechanic to do this and does it change emissions ? What are the benefits ?

If its not causing and problems I would leave well alone.
