2.0 hdi fuel consumption issues
#1
Over the last couple of months my 2.0 hdi multispace  has started to gobble more and more juice, to the point where it was down to 33mpg on long 70 mph runs. Checked all the usual stuff and changed filters but no difference. The strange thing tho it ran better than ever and pulled like a train even with a trailer in tow, and strangely no black smoke
Then while chatting to a  mate about it, he said his 406 did the same and he changed the MAF sensor. Did that to mine and bingo back to 50 mpg
Only trouble is its back to being as flat as a fart

No warning lights about the MAF sensor?

No unless you unplug it

Check that the EGR valve is not clogged up and sticking open, you will have to remove it to clean / check it.

Check that all of the air pipework to and from the turbo is in good condition and securely in place.

Check that the actuator arm on the turbo is free to move and the vacuum diaphragm is working with vacuum.

Check all vacuum pipe work is secure and in good condition with no splits.
