Poor cold startup 1.9

I'll have a go at the valve clearances next, how solid should the priming plunger go , mine never seems to show any resistance

Check the leak off pipes on the injectors, they become hardened as they age and fail to seal 100%, this lets air in and the fuel drains back as a result.

I've electrically checked my old glowplugs and they are 1ohm so are OK the cheap ones I put in lasted 2 goes then the end swelled up and never worked again so I've learnt a lesson there! I've put the old ones in and started it with my foot on the accelerator and it started fine but it wasn't freezing cold , next job check valve clearances. One thing I did notice when the manifold was off the two drivers side intakes are sooty where as the other two are oily, I know these two are near the breather hose but is this normal or a symptom of something?

Getting somewhere now it seems .... by the way a 1.9d will start with zero throttle or should I say it isn't needed.

Some sooting and oiling is fairly normal, give it all a clean next time apart and disable the egr by removing and plugging the two vacuum lines.

Check the leak off pipes between injectors and fuel pump for cracks, they don't always leak when they are split and just allow air to be drawn in hence causing you to have to draw the fuel back up the system to start it Wink very common!

From experience valve clearances being tight will just make it run knocky until its warmed for five or so minutes when it'll calm down, not cause it to not start for a while, that sounds fuel related to me if I'm honest...

Don't under estimate the effect of valve clearances !

My last 1.9d run perfectly all Summer and Autumn but come the colder mornings starting became a touch and go scenario and when trying to get the engine started at 06:00 hrs to go get home from working nightshift the difficulty / near non start became all the more palpable !

A maintenance check in my case found inlet valve clearances down to almost nil with a cold engine .
After shimming back to spec all was perfect afterwards.

Out of interest ambient temperatures for my difficulty / almost non start was + 4*C yet after shimming back to spec the engine would easily start at much lower temperatures - this was the year when we had minus 14 / 16 degrees centigrade which I remember all to well as I spent a fair bit of it outside working on air-con units

wen i did my valves i just turned the front wheel all the way right and stuck a 21mm socket on the crank and turned it clockwise. dont turn it backwards.

youll hit resistance each time it comes on cam. note the valve bucket is off set so the cam wont be vertical its offset at about 45 towards the windscreen when you measure it.
