thanks cancuna.. i actually had the egr blanked off but have just replaced it after cleaning it.. i tested it before refitting by connecting the vacuum tube and revving the engine.. valve opens and closes so i guess it's ok.

I do my 1.9d engines every 8000

I do my 200tdi landy every 7000

Or once a year depending what comes first.

Regular oil/filter changes are the one thing that your car really will thank you for. Given it takes what 20minutes and costs about 40 quid. Don't even need to jack a berlingo up !
Good time to jack it up though and give the underside a health check.

Let us know how it goes with the emissions test?

I do my main vehicles twice a year ( average 10 k per annum ) .... once in readiness for Summer and then Winter, each season places it's own demands on an engine.

I do my Land Rover 2 Litre petrol every 2k miles or annually - minimal filtration on by pass filter
My BSA A7 gets done every 500 miles - no filter only a sludge trap via centrifugal forces

Oil is cheaper than new metal ..................................

i doubt an oil change will help me through my test... i get black smoke, which is badly burnt fuel, not dirty oil causing the issue. looks like i have a fuel pump or inhector issue.

Yeah, if the EGR is not making enough difference then maybe an injector is failing? You could try some injector cleaner, can't really do any harm afaik. Do you have any way to read fault codes, Lexia or a cheapo OBD tool?

my next idea was injector cleaner.. any recommedations of brand/type?

i have a basic code reader.. well, it would be more than basic but my blingo is a 2004/5 european model where the law hadn't been implemented and my system isn't fully canbus or whatever it's called complient!

of course, my problem now is i cannot use vehicle on road... maybe on some lanes here (in rural spain) and the additives need a few miles of running to work?
