Roof noise
#1
I have had 2012 XTR with roof rails and Ariel for a year now. It has developed a noise in the roof panel which sounds like a bag of spanners bouncing around whenever I go over a bump in the road. Although they seem firm the only place they can come from is the front nearside roof rail mounting or the Ariel how do I get the plastic ends off the roof rails to check the fixings please. This problem is driving me mad.
Thanks I found a similar thread which posed a similar info about removing the roof rail but the answer must have been a private message as after posing the question the person just said thanks for resolving his problem. As you will prob know I am not very good at finding my way around sites on the internet I cannot find it again

The plastic end should slide off. This will reveal m8 bolt than holds roof rail.

Hi Opensauce which way does it slide ? Towards the front would seem obvious but it won't move for me always wary of hitting plastic with a hammer. There appears to be a cap at the silver rail end of the streamline black plastic cap which I can ease away but only at the bottom, does this joining cap need to be removed first?
Thanks

It definitely slides off towards the front. Reason I know this is because during washing with a wash brush the plastic bit slid off, so I pushed it back on & it clicked back into place. So it should unclip but plastic gets brittle after a few yrs so care will be needed. If bolt is loose rail will have some movement, I guess? If it is firm then look elsewhere. When I got a rattle as you describe in mine I traced it to a loose window regulator in driver's door.

Hi, If its any help, I had a rattle coming from the top corner of the windscreen area on my xtr which I first thought was in the area you describe , however after some trial and error it turned out to be the rubber weather strip had come unstuck above the front passenger door it had been vibrating and causing the noise. it was an easy fix to stick it back down!!
