[Engine] Nasty sooty smell

Not at all.

I think you have more than one issue.

First step read codes. Sort wiring loom . At least start with a. Constant.

If a lot of fumes then it could be your piston rings  Sad

When rebuilt where the valve oil stem seals changed ( another possible cause of oil getting into cylinders.)

Have you had the timing belt done , if wrongly fitted it will run poorly and smokey.

Is the EGR operating properly ?.  Or is it disabled and blocked off.?  Maybe burning/sucking in  more than fumes.

Today I checked the car in the morning and there was a lot of air pumped out through the oil filler aperture with the cap off which I could feel with my hand, though no fumes were visible - I don't know if this is a sign of blow by? I have some videos which I'll post later.

Its been a while coz I had been in the countryside.i had the car plugged into Peugeot planet by my mechanic (two of them) and the following were read off:-

intermittent EGR solenoid valve locked
Intermittent advance solenoid locked and
Permanent fault on throttle potentiometer.

We checked out the pot harness and found that the wire adjacent to the harness connector had been grazed off some insulation. after repairs on the harness connector, we cleared the faults, but the fault on the throttle pot persisted. When we removed the pot, we discovered that one of the harness wires was cut at the point of termination to the pot.

Fortunately I had a pump I had brought in from the UK from which I "borrowed" a pot which was in good condition. It was installed but to no avail. To be worked on further tomorrow. will keep you posted.

Well the further works were carried out today, and further rot on the harness was discovered, this time to the flywheel sensor harness connector wire where there insulation had been sheared off - fixed temporarily. The sensor itself is in a big mess, with some bypass wiring having been done earlier to keep it working - to be replaced on another day.

The following residual issues were still present:-

1) The throttle position reading is still not being received at the ECU. The wire was traced all the way to ECU and tested for continuity and was found ok. The ECU indicated default value of 20% for position and remained that way even when revved.

2) The ECU condition is still indicated as locked just as yesterday.

According to the electrician, the bsi may need to be replaced to get the ECU unlocked. I believe I need to add that the bsi was replaced with a used one 8 years ago after a botched car wash where an overzealous attendant aimed the pressure washer machine under the dashboard on the right side of the driver - (what a terrible place to fit an expensive gadget like a bsi - Peugeot) and the injector pump had to be decoded by chopping off the immobiliser.

Is BSI replacement inevitable and is there an alternative? And why is the ECU not reading the throttle pot & could it also be in need of replacement?

Please help!
