Have you thought of changing the fuel filter? Running out of fuel on older cars can cause all the crap in the bottom of the tank to clog it.

As long as you take the air from the return pipe only you should be alright,
if you crank the engine and no start, pump the primer and see and look at the clear pipe if any air is going back to the tank, if so the air is still in the system.
There is no lift pump in the tank on this system so it can be frustrating.

Remember it is only air, if you ran out with a clean cut of engine, try not to think up problems.

CRANK/ PRIME AIR WILL GO IF NOTHING LOOSE takes long than you think sometimes.

Bit of an update, went to the garage today, mechanic cant get it going either, his computer said it was a sensor gone, so he changed the sensor and still nothing. I know its an ex-british gas van and ive heard they mess about the the imbobilizers and create hellish problems. anyone know anything about this? hes now said it could be the timing out or something along those lines because Ive tried bumping it, recons the cam belt could have slipped...I find it hard to believe though!!!

These diesels are self bleeding. No need to undo injectors. Always make sure the fuel filter is topped right up with diesel before you bump the lid back down.
