It depends what age your car is.

             If you have the electronically controlled fuel pump its cold start is called for by the temperature sensor . Check if connected and your temp gauge is working.

If there is a diagnostic port get it scanned for faults

The older mechanically controlled fuel pump is worked by a cable from a wax pellet under the fuel filter area.

Hi The car is a year 2000 and looking at other models of the same era the engine is a DW8WJZ so does that narrow it down

Thanks for the link very useful
A funny thing this morning went to go out started the car to let it run for a couple of minutes as I have always done ran rough and misfired as usual ,realised I had forgotten my purse so had to stop car while I went to fetch it came back restarted the car and it ran perfectly no smoke, no misfire and no rough running any ideas why.

Hi all
Thank you for all of your help just had the timing rechecked by an independent diesel mechanic no wonder I was having problems timing out by 2-3 degrees and timing belt not adjusted properly to much play now running perfectly
