The tail gate of my 2012 keeps getting covered with dirt and mud its worse when there is just damp on the road, I have to keep using the rear washer to clean it ( every few minutes) so would mud flaps be the answer? As anyone had the same problem and did it stop when mud laps fitted?
I don't have the problem with my 2007 but it does have Flaps but is not the same shape as the 2012

I had factory mudflaps on my 2008 MkIII Multispace, it stops the roostertails of water from the rear wheels due to the short rear overhang from the wheels but it didn't stop the rear getting filthy, thats more due to the vertical rear of the car.
It never really bothered me to be honest as I drove vans for many years without rear windows.

As others have said they will help, in reality best to have them anyway. The vertical back end causes a vacuum, you can blame aerodynamics for that one, anyway it actually sucks the crap onto the rear of any vertical rear vehicle to various degrees.
Side mirrors are your friend.

Don't drill holes. You will cause rust to start. Use clamp on versions

will still get dirty due to the low pressure area created behind the flat back causing the s**t to be sucked in .

aerodynamics isnt all to do with simply with rounded vs flat back either
Height and width of the foil plays a huge part - the air has much further to travel over the top of the car than under.
This also generates an area of negative pressure behind that then draws the air under the car upwards to fill the void - under the car has all the s**t off the road in it also...

Having to go with the idea of fitting mud flaps I started to look for some and most of the moulded shape ones look like they have to be screw on, and the clamp type are the universal type flaps (although cheaper) on looking closer at some of the photos flaps for sale, I have a feeling most, if not all would have to be cut to enable the clamps to be fitted on the wheel arch unless I bought official flaps from a dealer which seem very expensive,
So what I thought would be an easy job may not be so easy, so maybe I should wait till the weather improves then have a closer look to decide what is the best solution. but right now have to be careful when opening the tailgate and getting my clothes dirty even more when using the boot camp
