[Engine] Sudden failure

Hi guys.
I wonder if anyone can help me.
While pulling away in first gear my 2002 2.0hdi berlingo suddenly made a loud clunking sound and immediately stopped. I believe the hazard warning lights came on automatically also. Thinking I must have just stalled the engine I turned the key but while it turned over it wouldn't start. I rolled back into my parking space fearful of a more serious issue. In my limited experience and knowledge I was wondering it it could be a cam belt tensioner or pulley failure leading to the belt jumping a tooth?
Any assistance is greatly appreciated. The car is parked on a slope and while I have tried to remove the cam belt covers I really don't want to get underneath it unless I have to.

Did you remove the covers and check the belt, pulleys and tensioner? I would check them before anything else. How long have you had the van and have you had it replaced at all, or any history of a change?

I have only had it a short time and have no info on any previous work carried out on it. Judging by the wear on the aux belt I would say it was due for a change anyway. I haven't been able to get the covers off yet due to the lack of space, would it be an easier job with the motor mount off and engine jacked up?

Yes mate, easier jacked up and wheel off along with plastic covers and inner arch. Hopefully not done any damage
