Berlingo 2008 1.6hdi cold start misfire issue
#1
Hi any ideas ? Brought a 2008 berlingo with common turbo fault due to engine. Fitted another engine (complete engine) all in and on cold start it has a missfire either leave it 10 seconds or one good rev it chucks out white smoke (defently unburnt diesel) and then is perfect until its stone cold again. Glow plugs are all brand new and power up and stay on for the smooth running, replaced glow plug control module/relay behind metal panal next to n/s headlamp. Then i put all 4 original injectors back in with new copper seals (no difference). Its like 1 pot is not burning the fuel on cold start up. Was fine woth old engine thanks.

Did you fit the new glow plugs?
How are you testing the plugs?

If you haven't already, try pumping the priming bulb under the engine cover a few times before staring from cold to see if it still misfires.

No glow plug light on dash is normal.

I appreciate the plugs are new and I'm not doubting you but you can't overlook anything when fault finding...I've seen working plugs which failed straight after being fitted.

Did you test each plug before fitting?

It sounds like you are using a voltage test with the multimeter on the plugs, this will show voltage at each plug even if the plug isn't working, as you are testing between the lead on the plug (+) and earth.

To test you need to remove the wire from the top of each plug and test the resistance of the each glow plug.

What puts my mind away from glow plugs is the fact its identicle from old and new ill change fuel filter aswell tomoz. I carnt think of anyway the new engine could be at fault unless its slightly diwn on compression on one cylinder ? it was perfect before engone swap

Some HDi's will start and run from cold with no smoke with a couple of glow plugs not working, some won't, I know that as we have two 1.6 HDI's.

The plugs come on for 3 minutes after start up unless the coolant is at a certain temperature.

Air in the fuel system (Air leak) can cause a misfire after vehicle has been standing and the air has entered allowing fuel to drain back a little, hence pumping the priming bulb before start up.

Could be a failing injector or low compression but best rule out other things first.
