Alternator identification
#1
Hello all, alternator has gone on my 2003 1.9d, I guess there will be more than one kind fitted, any easy way to identify which one I have, I assume they're not interchangeable?

Define gone?

Take a look at it and get the part number from it then google it.

Think so, had a loud screeching from under the bonnet, sounded like a bearing, increased with engine revs, but I couldn't identify the source, then the screeching stopped but something sounded like a bag of spanners being shaken, being a pessimist I decided a bearing had gone in the gearbox, however gearbox is still operating as normal, and the following day the battery light illuminated on the dash, so thinking maybe something has broken in the alternator?

all suggestions gratefully received.

Try tightening the auxiliary belt, it sounds more like it is slipping than anything if it stops screeching when the load is off.
So where does this bit go then ?

Try putting your reg number into a site like Carparts4less and see what comes up. From a quick look at things, there are differences available but they relate to the output. There will almost certainly be people that rebuild them with online services too.

Hi  thanks, had a look, doesn't appear to be slipping, all that unseemly noise has stopped now anyway, everything sounds quite normal, however, measuring at the battery it's only putting out less than 11v at idle and 11.5v at high rpm, I think it's a gone.

Thanks, Euro Car Parts have suggested a couple, I'll give them a go, can always take it back if its the wrong one.

Before you buy, check the CP4L website, they sell the same stuff with the same part numbers and are often cheaper. They also have a 12% off code on the website at the moment. The only difference I've found is that they can take a few days to deliver.

Likely the brush pack has failed - hence noise and then lack of charge.

Repair isn't difficult, take details from the label on the alternator.

Well got the alternator off, was turning over to have a good look at it and a small stone fell out, can't imagine that rattling around would be good for it.
