Thanks for the info Jed. I would of thought it would of been earlier to help with fuel economy and engine revs would be a bit less

for the earlier versions there was only a 6 gear semi-automatic gearbox, and because the gearbox could not handle fully the engine´s torque, these versions were also equipped with a dual-mass flywheel.

When i first got my b9 i kept going for 6th gear and was quite surprised it didn't have one, my 03 vivaro has 6 gears, my b9 would have been even better with a six speed box, i even looked to see if there a optional one that i could retro fit !

This was discussed a while ago, it was inconclusive whether the 6th gear was a higher ratio or the same with the rest being closer spaced.

My C4 has the 6 speed manual (same engine and box as the Berlingo) and it's quite clumsey in action so not suited for fast changes, I really think the auto box would have been a better choice.

It would not make much sense to have the same final gear ratio in a more powerfull, and with more torque engine (they have gone from 110 bhp to 120 bhp and from 240 Nm to 270 Nm. What would make sense would be a gearbox with a lower final ratio, so that the engine would rev at lower regimes (more economic) for the same speed but this is only what would make sense, and logic is not always used by the manufacturers. Mine is a manual 5 gear with a 112bhp motor and 270 Nm and in my trips I would apreciate a lot having a 6th gear, because to roll at 130km/h, the engine is reving touching the 3k rpm, which makes for a quite elevated fuel consumption in these long trips.
And normally the cars (as opposed to vans) have a lower final gear ratio by default, even with the 5 gear gearboxes, due to the lower load capacities.

Ian

I have a 2016 xtr 120 with stop/start with 6 speed manual box. They appear to be rare, but are about. The 6th gear reduces engine speed to about 2200 rpm at an indicated 70mph. I had a 92bhp one with 5 speed previously.
It does provide for more relaxed motorway cruising, i haven't seen huge savings in mpg, as i probably now go a bit quicker, it's just nice to cruise at 70ish without feeling you are thrashing the engine, (i used to cruise at 60 to keep revs down) it would appear to get good mpg it's best not to exceed 2000rpm which in the old one was about 56 mph if i remember correctly. The new one is about 68mph, so big difference. Still think it could pull an even higher gear through!
I was lucky in that i found one with all the extras, 3mths old but new with 5miles on clock from a dealer in London. I got it for a lot, lot, less than the list price!
Even with all the options, mod top, lights, satnav etc, Who would pay £21000+ for a berlingo!!!
If you are after one, search around, and don't forget Peugeot.
Oh by the way they have adblue with smaller fuel tank so range has reduced down to 560miles, from 660miles that I could get from my old one.
