service oil
#1
Just had my 2010 1.6 xtr serviced and the garage used Mercedes Benz low ash fully synthetic oil.
Is this oil suitable?
Feedback welcome

Hi Zach

From what i can see it's 5w/30 fully synthetic oil low ash MB229.51 it looks similar to the PSA standard but obviously they won't submit their oil to a rival manufacturer for testing so it's impossible to know.
Chances are that it will be ok in the short term but there is no way of knowing the long term results.
Also if your car / van is under any warranty it would probably invalidate it.

I keep to oil that is PSA approved because of my concern about turbo lubrication and contamination of the oil with carbon causing damage.

If there are any mercs with psa engines that use this oil you should be ok, but as far as i know only the citan is a Renault and can't think of any merc badged PSA vehicles or them using PSA engines in any of their own like ford / Volvo etc.

Its been a while since I had my 1.6hdi but I'm pretty sure this is the oil I used, https://www.nielsencdg.co.uk/acatalog/To...l#SID=1065
AS long as the merc oil meets the Total oil spec you should be alright.
Are we there yet????? Huh
Ex 1.6hdi van now 3 seater 1.4 multispace

I understand totally Zac. And always remember the only fool is the person that never asked the question or did the research.

All the best.

It's a pity they did not use the correct Total ineo ecs & then the question would not need to be asked.

Are all the different car manufacturers low ash 5w40 fully synthetic oils ok for use ? I believe Ford VAG GM etc have oils which they approve / make .

Unless any poster has specific knowledge. It would be wise to use only oil of the actual PSA spec for engine. It does appear all that is required to bust the DV6 turbo failure myth is to use specified oil at specified change intervals which is not really that difficult.

I've gone down that route, and was checking i hadn't missed any new information.
The difference in price between the merc oil and ineo ecs is less than a pound a litre, so no real advantage there.
