Soon to be new owner
#1
Hi,

After driving Ford Galaxys for the past 14 years my wife and I are now thinking that as the kids don't venture out with us very much there is little point in two of us rattling around in a 7 seater. She has always liked the Berlingo and its Peugeot equivalent so we are on the look out for one. We live in west Cornwall on the back of Hayle beach and probably do about 20,000miles a year. I have always serviced and repaired the Galaxy as and when issues have cropped up(more often than preferred) and I am forever picking up old mopeds all over the country to restore, repair and ride. My Dad had a 2.0 hdi Partner quiksilver from new in 2004 for 5 years and loved it, I can remember not being that keen on the van like looks at the time but now for us it would be the ideal vehicle, hopefully reading through the forums will point me in the right direction of the model and spec that approx £1500 will get me.

Welcome £1500 should get you a 1.9d or a 2.0hdi either should be a good purchase. Dont worry too much about the miles they do go forever.

Thanks,

I did promise myself that after owning 2 Galaxys, the first being a wonderful old 1.9tdi on a 99 plate, the most recent being a 1.9 pd150 one, that I wouldn't especially race out to buy another diesel ever again. Our Current galaxy has never been great on fuel, ate a clutch at 130,000 miles (dual mass delight), and generally wears itself out on a continuous cycle, we have done 60,000 miles in it in 3 years and I know the 2.0 hdi engine is a good power plant, but I am drawn to the simplicity of the 1.4 TU engined petrol Berlingo, I am sure it would match my current car for economy, and going forward to when things need replacing I think petrol engine components are much cheaper than the diesel counterpart

I did work for Ford for a while and i know their diesel engines have never been great! Citroen on the other hand are one of the best, you will aso find DMF's are not a problem like they are in Fords.

The Galaxy we have uses the Volkswagen engine, it makes good useable power and will cruise all day long at 70mph @ about 2000rpm but has never managed more than 44mpg, I know its a heavy car but I am sure a petrol Berlingo  would manage that, and looking around the petrol Berlingos don't seem to be quite as expensive as the diesel ones

Yes the petrols are cheaper new so that tends to be passed on to the second hand values.
