I've read a lot of posts about the 1.6 diesel, the general view seems to be that they are good if there's a FSH and they've been fed the right engine oil. If someone was to buy an older 1.6 HDi, can any potential problems be avoided by remedial work / preventative maintenance?

The must have been serviced correctly from new just like any other engine, you never want somthing that has previously been neglected.

Dont worry too much about the turbo failures most if not all can be attributed to incorrect servicing mainly the incorrect oil used.
The internet has blown it up out of all proportion - you do NOT need to modify anything if you change the oil regular using the correct oil grade 5w30 low saps oil MUST be used.

To check 1.6HDI for carbon build up just remove brake vacuum pump (2 bolts , 5 min work)
and check if there is clog in it's filter.
