Problem Starting Van - Many Avenues already explored- Please help!
#1
Hello All

Firstly i'm new to the forum so i hope I've posted this in the right place!

I have the Berlingo RHY 2.0 HDI 2006 van.  It will not start. Sometimes it fires up fine, it could be run for hours at a time , but then after being turned off and nothing has been changed it won't start for maybe days at a time. If i disconnected the battery for a day or 2 it sometimes will start back up , but not always.

All the lights will come on, on their own. The horn and washer pump stop working and the wipers turn on, on their own.  The indicators also do not work, but hazards do. It originally had an aftermarket alarm which has been removed.

It cranks over; starter motor , alternator and battery have all been done but has not seemed to sort it. It loses communication with the BSI and when its not starting the BSI is blocked.  However, the BSI has tested okay but i tried another one just in case. On the new BSI it wont let me code it or the keys  and the button on the keys for locking/ unlocking doesn't work, even with the key code.

All fuses are okay. Engine loom had some damaged wires but has been repaired.

All codes from engine have cleared and are staying out.

Fault codes from instruments:
  •   no.15 CAN bus/data cable between readout ecu and radio  (radio is currently disconnected )
  •   65 display
  •   permanent fault communication with the switch module at steering wheel ecu

If anyone has any suggestions in getting my van back up and working I would be massively grateful!

I don't know what the codes mean but your symptoms sound like a crank position sensor fault. When it fails to start try some easy start as an experiment.
So where does this bit go then ?

With reference to the electrics, I'm no electrician, but I've heard of similar electrical gremlins caused by a loose/broken/disconnected earth cable. You mentioned damaged wiring? It may be worth examining all engine bay earth cables/connections intact/secured.

Good luck!

These are symptoms that happened to me on my 07 van when my BSI went. When you got a replacement BSI did you also get the ECU and transponder chip with it?
