Anyone who's actually replaced an engine

Ok let's put it another way has anyone fitted a replacement engine in an M59? If so a) did you fit one with the same code number? If yes did it fire straight up or need anything resetting? If you didn't fit one with the same code a) what problems if any did you encounter? b) did you use the diner parts like injectors or fit the old ones? Thanks
