Window wiper stalk stuck

There's paint or some crap inside the end of the window wiper stalk meaning that I can't turn it fully. Is it possible to just take the end off and clean it or do I have to remove the whole mechanism?

It should be possible to pop the end off but it can be tricky to put back together. There are also at least 2 types of stalk. I seem to remember pictures & discussions about the stalks in threads about the trip computer.
