Gear stock rattle

Please help. I have a 64 plate 1.6hdi berlingo with 52k on clock. The van has developed a rattle on the gearstick when in 5th gear but only when accelerating as soon as I take foot of pedal it stops. Any help appreciate as it driving me mad.

Hi Kirk and welcome.

Its a really difficult one to diag from a laptop because it could be so many things, start by checking all your engine mountings. The air filters can rattle their heads off on the 1.6hdi's - all the rubber mountings wear. And the 5th gear can come loose in the gearbox. It will also have a DMF but i doubt it is that if its only doing it in 5th.

I have the very same rattle. From what i've read it seems to be coming through the linkages from the gearbox. I 'm going to top up/check my gearbox oil level this weekend to see if it helps. I'd imagine it is a commen problem but I couldn't find a definitive answer. Let me know how you get on.

Hello Paul, did you top up or get any further with the issue. Mine is still rattling. I'm lost as to the cause. Hopefully you have fixed yours and know the answer.
