Starts perfect when parked facing down hill, park it uphill it will not start even after turning and turning, tried manual pump can feel pressure return then eventually after turning and turning it fires but very lumpy.
Suspect air getting into fuel line, WHERE do I start to look.
Please help it maddening.

This is a fault with a variety of different cars, and your suspicions are probably correct.
Fuel supply pipework is connected along its route by O-rings, or 'rubber' seals, and these sometimes shrink over time due to engine heat or vibration. Ths shrinkage allows fuel to run back to its lowest point in the pipework due to air ingress.
First question - Has the fuel filter been changed recently? Is the priming pump in good shape? If checking all underbonnet joints on the fuel supply line does not show up the cause, and it's sometimes a pain to trace, coat each joint in grease to block air ingress. Bit by bit the culprit should be found. That's not the only cause, but it's the most likely one, so the first thing to check.
Fortunately such a leak is usually confined to the engine bay, due to heat and vibration on the fuel lines - unless you've had a bump recently that may have disturbed other parts of the line.
On some Mercedes models this is common, and the fix is to renew all the O-rings - about £5 and an hour's fiddling.
