Question 
Hi all, has anyone fitted a diesel powered heater in their camper but had a seperate underslung tank fitted? Id really like some form of heater in our camper so that I dont freeeeeze in our scottish winters, but as my lingo is petrol I cant tap into fuel lines and will need a separate tank. Has anyone else done this? How much room do they need inside the van? Can anyone recommend someone who could fit one?

Eberspacher's are common in boats, some with separate diesel tanks, but there are now others on the market.

Have you looked at cheaper Units on Ebay now, around £170? These are not difficult to fit, say, using a 15 litre separate tank for diesel within a normal camper.
Here's one. 2000 watt output. They are also made in 5000 watt units. Some of these are complete kits, including fuel tank.

A car heater on max is rated at less than 2000 watts, so overnight background heating should easily be achieved by these units. Fuel usage is miserly.

Bear in mind that these things are not quiet. My cooler hums and annoys me if I mistakenly leave it on at night, so one of these would keep me awake all the time. Just depends how sensitive you are to constant background noise.

fitted a gas and hook up electric in a vw camper works well but not cheap.

We have a Diesel Ebspatcher in our van and must say its very effective, the start-up noise is a factor but it dies to a quiet whisper when the set temp is reached, its much quieter than a fan heater.

Have you got a 12v leisure battery system then? Can I ask where you fitted the heater and the battery? I was thinking the two rear footwells could work, but its so tight for space I wasnt sure if underslung would be better.

I've fitted an Ebby in my Berlingo. It's in the boot but boxed in about a foot off the floor so I could route the exhaust around the spare wheel without losing the wheel all together. I have a leisure battery also charged from a split charger unit.
It's great for winter work.

Missed the extra fuel tank bit. No I've got it coming from the main diesel tank. I make sure I fill up before camping.

I did have a diesel Eberspächer Air Heating (around 4 to 5 kW) in my camping van MB 207 D for 20 years and a have a diesel Webasto Air Heating (around 5 kW) in my 27 foot sailing boat for about 30 years.

The Eberspächer was much more noisy that days and I didn't like the plastic housing. Over the years I did have problems with the under voltage control. So a good battery, good wire connection to ground with solid wire is a must.

It would probably be easier to just get the petrol powered version of the heater. They do Petrol, diesel and gas versions. My old petrol Range Rover had a factory fitted Webasto aux heater.

How did you route the exhaust pipe? I'm looking to install a heater and am looking for the best place for the exhaust and air inlet. Thanks
