EML after flat battery
#1
Just to set the scene, my Berlingo doesn't get a lot of use as it's only used to transport my bikes and is also often started just to move it so other cars can get on or off our drive. This is obviously tough on the battery and in the recent cold weather I came to move it and although it unlocked fine on the remote the battery didn't have quite enough power to start the engine. I hooked it up to my trickle charger which did the job eventually and the van started no problem.

Then I noticed the EML was on so hooked up my code reader and downloaded the list, wow that's a long list  Dodgy although I suspected some were old and probably weren't the cause of the EML, so I cleared them. The EML stayed off for a couple of days but then reappeared one morning after starting the van. Code reader out again but this time I made a note of the codes. P0409 - "Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor "A" circuit" so that's the EGR and P0104 - "Mass Air Flow MAF Circuit Intermittent" so that's the MAF.

The van is driving perfectly and there is no difference in performance if the EML is on or off. The battery seems OK now but could a slightly low voltage be causing these codes to pop up or is it a coincidence that the battery was flat before these codes appeared. I haven't had a good look around the engine yet for loose connections or split pipes and don't want to fork out for a new battery if this isn't the problem.

So to conclude, can a flat battery cause the EML to come on and would it continue to re-show even when cleared?

Cheers for any pointers.

Both seem to be electrical problems, so maybe just some damp in the connectors?

If its not getting much use damp will play havoc with a modern vehicle electrics, when mine didnt get much use i would have all kind of warning lights coming on the dash!

Another reason would be a low battery - again modern vehicles need a good battery 12.5 minimum or you will start to get problems, remember the battery does more than start the vehicle on vehicles now.

The only real answer to your problems is use the vehicle every day or buy an older vehicle with less electrics on it - something like the old 1.9d Berlingo.

I hadn't thought of damp but it's certainly a possibility with the amount of rain we've had lately, as is a low battery. I'm pretty sure the fault codes are false as like I said earlier the van is running perfectly.
