My '06 1.6 Hdi runs slightly smoother from cold clatters less and gives slightly crisper running.
It is a subtle thing but nicer from cold is good.
MPG is the same for me.

I was advised by a Citroen specialist to use premium at least every 4th thankful, not just for the injectors but to help keep the egr clean too.

This discussion comes up regularly on many forums.
There is one giant fuel distribution company in the UK that has far more road tankers than all the others put together, and regularly supplies both the supermarkets and premium fuel stations from the same tankers.
In addition, there are strict standards clearly laid down and regularly checked for all road fuel supplied in the UK. Every drop going through our injectors has to meet these standards.
It makes me wonder how much real world extra benefit I'm getting if I fill up with 'Ultra Super Fantastic Premium' instead of Regular, and how much is the placebo effect if I buy premium fuel?

Every time this comes up some will say that the base fuel is the same, but different / better additives are used in premium fuels.
The problem is the oil companies are so secretive they will not stand up and say in proper English why their fuels are better / different , all we get is weasel words from their marketing departments and adverts.
A fifth gear test proved a measurable gain from adding Redex to fuel, Redex is cheaper to use per thankful compared to premium fuels.
There is video of the fifth gear test on YouTube.
Many believe it all ( both premium and Redex) to be snake oil.
The fifth gear test is the closest thing to evidence that I can find.

For years I have added both Cetane enhancer and mineral 2stroke oil when I fill up with diesel. I don't use premium diesel.
I buy the 2stroke in bulk, 10 litres at a time, and keep a small dispenser in the car. I sometimes get a funny look from other customers when I put a measured squirt into the tank before I begin filling up - from an old bleach container.
It certainly makes the engine run smoother and drive better - but hey, that might also be wishful thinking! It works for me.

I can tell the diference by driving .....
when I get in and start the car in the morning and it is sounding / running rougher so I take a glance at the fuel gauge and if it was different to where I left off I ask my wife if she has put fuel in.
She will say yes and when pressed she will either say at Tesco or Sainsbury.
I fill up at Texaco
.......
My wife took the car to West Wales to stay there for a month almost whilst I stayed at home to undertake building / painting / decorating to save her and the dogs from all the mess and fumes ..... anyway ...
Whilst there she fills up several times at Tesco in Pembroke Dock and becomes used to Tesco fuel ....
fast forward a month and back at home I fill up with Texaco Premium, the next morning she drives to the shops and on her return she asks " what have you done to the car it's driving really nicely ? "
As scientific as I will ever need
Of course I'm not trying to squeeze every penny and prefer a subtly sweeter engine.
edit : unfortunately the human body gets quickly acclimatisd to the improved " performance " and soon we begin to question the efficacy of premium fuels / tank additives ....... I'm however " lucky " enough to get frequent reminders due to my wifes inability to drive to Texaco "

The big transport fleets have been using either premium fuels or adding an additive e.g. Millers for some time now they report up to 2 mpg extra and improved reliability and downtime due to emission problems / fuel injection problems according to the IRTE.
Me i use normal fuel and add Millers at every fill my 1.6hdi does maily short runs and shows near no smoke. My friends won't listen or cant be bothered and they have the same engine and they all smoke and run much rougher than mine.
So it works for me - try it and see is my answer
