[Engine] 2004 - 1,4i - Fuel pump relay problem
#1
Hello.

I have a 2004 Berlingo 1,4i with a fuel system problem.

The car has had problems for months, and behaves like this:
If/when it starts, it runs like a clock and never stops.

Sometimes it won't start. Then it's completely dead. Like now...
If I then connect a 12V supply to the fuel pump, the car starts immediately.
When I measure the 2 middle pins of the connector for the fuel pump,
I have approx. 7 volts with ignition on, and around 8 volts when cranking.
Guess it should be 12V...?

I have searched the car for a fuel pump relay, but can't find it.
One local Citroen garage said there should be a relay somewhere around the battery,
and another garage said there was no separate relay, but e relay function integrated in the fuse box...

If the last thing is correct, which fuse box?
BSI under the wheel?
Fuse box by the battery?
Other fuse box? Where?

I have removed and opened BSI, but don't know if this is the correct box?
If it is, what relay inside it is for the fuel pump?

Any replies would be very much appreciated!! :-)

It hould sit on the sidewall just in front of the battery...

but measuring approx 7 volts sounds strange. That can be because of a bad earth connection, too.

It’s the psf1 your after next to the battery, you can register on Citroen’s website as a trader and pay to get a wiring diagram for 7 quid (pays to print of everything you can think of at the time!)

If it was a bad earth gadgetman it wouldn’t start with twelve volts, I would check where it comes out of the psf1 once you have a wiring diagram and then measure between the 12v feed from there to the twelve volt input at the pump and see what the voltage drop is, I suspect it will be 5-6 volts and you have a bad connector or a chaffed wire somewhere, it could also be a supply issue aswell but generally this would effect more than one circuit but assumption is the mother of all f**k ups and all Wink

or the psf1 has a voltage drop issue internally (this isn’t the bsi!!) the psf 1 is a multi layered, fully lacquered up circuit board arrangement that’s not really practical to be serviced or have parts replaced! The good news is that if it is this unit internally you can replace them with any other of similar design and part number, and then just swap it as it’s not coded, and even new from memory they were 130-150+vat I think

Hello Roy,
Did you ever find the solution for your fuel pump control issue?  I am having the same problem with my 2007 1.4L
Thanks

Hi Timppa.

Yes, I actually found a solution. The problem was in the BSM (fuse box under the hood). For months, my solution was very easy: Whenever the car didn't start, I just knocked hard a few times on the side of the fuse box, and the car started every time! ?

However, when I was going to sell the car, I felt like finding a proper fix. This video helped me:  https://youtu.be/pgzRLDEPJto

Some soldering, and the problem was permanently repaired. Good luck! ?

I traced my problem back to the BSM fuel pump relays not pulling, the control  is from a daughter board attached to the BSM, so I just ordered a new BSM (chinese) from ebay.  Hopefully this is the resolution.
Thanks again for your reply and I am glad to hear you solved your issue.

Hi Roy,

first of all, thank you for your previous posts...
I have been having the exact same issue with my Berlingo 1.4i 2008.
When it starts it runs, but sometimes it does not at all. Not a nice habit for a car in terms of reliability...
Lately it did not start again, so I tried hitting hard on the side of the BSM...and guess what...it works!!!
I felt like a proper mechanic Wink

Now, I would also like to permanently fix this issue...however I have little knowledge of cars electronics, BSM, ECU etc...
You say: some soldering and the problem was fixed. Can you tell me more about what exactly you did?
I could then use that knowledge to talk to my mechanic, see if we can fix it together.

Thanks again, at least I can drive again...

Leon
