Today's mystery object to fall off the Berlingo

Pulled up at roundabout, there was a clonk & something bounced off my foot. Subsequent investigation revealed the following 3 parts in the footwell. (see photo)

   

It's obvious how it goes together and it's some sort of return spring but no immediately obvious where it came from (not while looking in the dark anyway).

Everything seems to be working OK but I'd like to return it to it's rightful place, so team, what is it and where does it go?

I was thinking along those lines although it doesn't seem to have made a lot of difference to the "weight" of the notoriously heavy Berlingo clutch.

Just need to work out which way round it goes.

Yes, it's the spring off the clutch pedal.

Mine fell off once and I found a diagram on the citroen parts website that showed where it went.

I think it was a case of pushing the pedal and compressing the spring to put it back in situ.

It's purpose is as you say, supposed to lighten the clutch pedal. When I put mine back on, it did seem to move a little more smoothly.

It was the clutch pedal return spring. This acts in the manner of an over-centre catch and as such is a bit of a bugger to refit as the spring is almost fully compressed when at rest.

I offer the following for anyone else who has to carry out this task:

1. Compress the spring using 2 suitable cable ties, inserted under rather than over the end coils as per fig. A

   

2. Assemble the two plastic parts through the compressed spring, they will only fit one way, with the slots at the ends parallel as in fig.B

   


3. Refit the unit by sliding the top slot over the smaller peg in the bracket above the clutch pedal, depress the clutch pedal and easy the bottom slot onto the larger peg on the side of the pedal. You need strong fingers.

4. Cut and remove the cable ties you used to compress the spring.

5. Operate the clutch pedal a few times to settle and centre the assembly.

6. You may find that the bottom part settles close to the end of the peg on the clutch pedal and there's nothing to stop it slipping off to the left, which I assume is what happened last night. I have placed a cable tie around the spring and pedal arm just tight enough to prevent any lateral movement so it shouldn't happen again (see photos sorry about the quality, it's a bit tight under there and too dark without flash)

Thanks for the help, happened to me this morning just before I had to drive into London and I've spent all day wondering what it was and how I got to London without it attached.
