PSA B71 2290 approved oils.

With the recent discussions on engine oils, I thought I would post a list of Peugeot Citroen approved oils.

Total Quartz Ineo ECS 5W30 

TITAN GT1 PRO C-2 SAE 5W-30

Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30

Castrol Magnatec STOP-START 5W-30 C2

valvolene synpower environment c2 5w-30

Shell Helix Ultra Extra X 5W-30

EUROREPAR PREMIUM C2 (owned by PSA )

WOLF OFFICIALTECH 5W30 C2

Motul 8100 ECO-CLEAN 5W-30

CHAMPION OEM SPECIFIC 5W-30 C2

Q8 FORMULA ELITE C2 5W-30

If anyone knows of any that I've missed, please feel free to add to the list.

Just Google B712290 approved oils and you'll find quite a few more for your list.

Just did that to test, first listing Opie oils , opened link to first suggested oil Granville hyperlube
And in the listing it says both suggested for and meets but not actually approved, the second oil g force says the PSA number in the listing under specifications but again not approved, the third oil comma xflow says "Recommended for applications requiring" which while much clearer is not the approved oil I asked Google for.

The oils you mention will meet all of the specifications it's just the makers haven't paid the man for the piece of paper that gives them the right to say the product is approved, so legally they can't say it has the approval, however they can suggest it and state that it meets or exceeds the required levels which may be easier expressed by quoting the approval number.

The fact they haven't submitted their oil for testing means, we have only their word that the oil is good enough and they are trying to sell it , bit of a vested interest there and while I might be inclined to trust some manufacturers of oil others not so much.
The fact they haven't had it tested and approved, to me is all the more reason they shouldn't be riding the coattails of those who have by misusing the approval number.

They're not misusing the approval number, they are stating that their oil is equivalent or better than it.


Answer me this just out of interest, 

you're changing your oil and the only two oils available to you are, a brand you have never ever heard of we'll call it "Smiths oil" for this example or Shell oil.

The Shell oil doesn't have the approval but the Smiths oil does . .  which do you use?

They are saying in their opinion their oil is equal or better than than the manufacturers standard without any proof of that being the case.

I would always use a approved oil while under warranty, as I wouldn't want to give wriggle room to the manufacturer if a problem should arise.

So you would rather use a no name unheard of oil that had the approval rather than a trusted brand with the same specifications but that didn't have the approval?

While under warranty, it makes no sense to risk voiding the warranty by either using workshops or materials that Citroen don't approve. You might end up saving a few quid today and losing a lot more tomorrow.

But after warranty your choice is wider. As far as oils go, most lubricants now are so good that probably any recognised low saps high quality oil will have no serious downside - except price.

My take on oils, as it always has been, is to use fully synth low saps, with the grade to suit the climate and driving environment, and change both oil and filter together frequently. To me that's not an expense - it's an insurance.
