Frozen Gearbox
#1
Before we start, yes I know it's bloody cold due to the "Beast from the East", but got into the car this morning after letting it run for a few mins while I defrosted the windscreen. Come to get in car to set off and no way could I get it into 1st gear! Had to wait 10 mins until it eventually went in followed for 1 mile in 1st until it eventually went into 2nd!
Never had this before, should I be concerned about gearbox oil level maybe?
Once again, yes, I know it's -6 degrees......

Does look like a case for an oil check and change. Not the weather for doing the job though! This seems more than stiff linkage.

We slept in the frig last night to keep warm.

You may have the wrong oil in the gearbox, i think they have changed the spec.

I had my gearbox oil changed recently and the box does not feel like a 3rd world gearbox anymore, in fact it feels quite good!

What spec is the oil now? Is it not 75W 80?

It is but its but its this now https://www.nielsencdg.co.uk/total-trans...ot-201278/

There is more to oil than viscosity, oils are getting more and more complicated and specific.

Hi Polar.
I've never really bothered with the branded stuff as it usually costs a bomb. have done all my own servicing using Triple QX with a service kit off eBay for £52. 3 services so far and no mechanical issues ever.
Will be the first gearbox service though. Trying to find the crush washer sizes now as we speak....

Yes, I'm very surprised you're not blaming the cheap oil and recommending that only an approved oil is used.

I would be looking at the linkages first, make sure they are well lubed up with grease.
