[Engine] Lumpy Starting

My Berlingo Romahome has developed a starting problem.

It is just as though one of the glow plugs has gone.  I have checked the plugs and all are working.

Has anyone got a suggestion?

what year, model, engine do you have?

How did you check the plugs?

Presumably once the engine has started the idling smooths out?
Does this lumpy running only happen on cold starts, or on every start?
Which engine do you have?
You can see my thinking, I'm sure.

If it’s a dw8 there’s every chance if it’s not a weepy leak off pipe or a glow plug that your valves need re shimming, I had a dw8 that cold started horribly until it warmed up and the head expanded a little and the valves shut properly

My 1.9D starts almost instantly in a morning but the idle is very lumpy for the first couple of minutes, then all of a sudden it starts idling normally. I'v never managed to find what causes it, I replaced the glow plugs and fuel filter but it didn't make any difference, i'v just learned to live with it.

that will be your wax stat being dead - most folk just turn the idle up rather then replace the wax stat every coiple of years

lumpy starting on a dw8 that isnt glow plugs will almost always be cam follower bucket shim adjustment required.

ALL of my valves were eirther closed or nearly closed during start up until the car got warm. Sounded like a bag of spanners falling down the starts and horrible to start turning over for ages.....

adjusted valve shims - it started like a brand new shiny pin with only a hint of rattle - i managed to borrow a box of shims from a mate but good luck finding shims - or even a garage to do it these days, Matey said he used to do 2 or 3 a week back in the 90s - anywhere from 30k onwards - ususally about 90k. - which was bang on the money for my bingp . my peugeot with same engine got to 120k and never needed it and started sweet - but it only ever did long trips - i suspect the bingo was used for short trips before i got it.
