Sergio - I also have a Mercedes that has done 320k kilometres. The glowplugs have never been touched, and all are still working fine. Whether the 1.6hdi engine is heavy on glowplugs by comparison I do not know, but glowplugs can last for more kilometres than your's has done.

It would be sensible to check the operation of the glow plug relay and to check each glow plug is working before assuming they were all off.
I suspect a lot of the horror stories you hear of snapped plugs during removal are due to a heavy hand.
You need to be very gentle and patient with their removal, if you barge in and just try to screw them out I would imagine it would be very easy to snap them.

I replaced the EGR valve awhile ago (<5,000 miles) and cleaned it inside-out completely. New oil/diesel/air filters. I have not replaced the glowplugs, but might do that soon. When warm, no smoke, no rough idle, smooth.
No errors in Lexia, nothing. It would be great if you manage to find what is causing this.

Whe share the same problem and join bad smell on the smoke, but I have it a long time however it worst on winter as I said before.
I have defenitly 3 or 4 errors related to EGR and the glowplugs. I unpluged EGR and at cold start the same engine behavor.
EGR is about 250euros and glow plugs I´m afraid because I don´t have another car in case of snap the plug.
If you change glow plugs and the smoke changes please let me know
best regards

Hi Sergio,
The bad smell is also with mine. I had previously replaced a single glowplug as there was an error in Lexia. Should have probably replaced them all. I might replaced them all anyway, but it will be in a month or so. Mine is ~82,000 miles only, but the glowplugs might be gone without an error in Lexia. Last time I checked them with a multimeter, ground on the engine body and there was not a continuity on one of the glowplugs. I will probably do that to see if there is anything suspicious. I will let you know if I find something.
Cheers,
Saskak

Saskak, i put a video and the on the video says that the plugs on 1.6hdi from year 2006 or 2007, (mine is from 2007) all have a kind of plug´s witch the "nozzle" increases inside the engine. So I´m afraid to remove them and when recharging i see direfent ways of take them out. One´s say needs to be cold or with warm engine etc.
The smoke strats at ~180K, and i google several times even in other foruns about this problem, and the result is beside changing the glowplugs they change MAF, EGR, changing injectors, and cleaning of the air intake system.
The mechanics I have ben in two and they wont to change this parts also, beside that both of them say you have to take head engine to remove plugs
whatever, i will google the way to check continuity on plugs and relay and also do a leak off test.

Have you considered just fitting a blanking plate to stop the egr filling the engine with gunk?
I either do this or electrically disable the egr with all cars I drive.

Mine is also 2007. I changed one of the glowplugs a couple of years ago and there was no problem at all. Do not remember, but I think I set my torque wrench to 8Nm, in other words below the required torque for the glowplugs. I might be wrong, as I do not quite remember, but the torque settings were 12Nm. The it came out without a problem. I was also afraid at the time not to break one in the chamber, that is why I did not replace all of them at the time. Might have to do it this time.
Cheers,
saskak

Remove the glow plugs when the engine is hot, run the engine until the thermostat opens around 90 degrees.
Keep the socket square onto the plug and only make a small turn at a time then release the tension, proceed like this being very gentle and taking your time.
The plugs may squeak and make a cracking noise with each small turn but just keep on with the small turn and release the tension method.
Occasionally you can screw the plug back in a turn or so.
The more the plug is removed the less tension you will need to apply to turn it.
When installing the new plugs make sure to lightly coat them in anti seize paste.
Do not over tighten the new plugs.
