Quiet beeping noise and ABS light
#1
Hi,

I'm getting a quiet (e.g. can't hear it if music is on) high pitched beeping noise from my 2009 Diesel Berlingo Multispace - a few repeated beeps in very quick succession (bit like ringing) and then variable gaps from 10 seconds up to a number of minutes.
Happens mostly at higher speeds (50 to 70 mph) - still happens but much less frequently at 30.
Doesn't seem anywhere loud enough to be an intended "warning" and not quite sure exactly where it is coming from.

It also seems to precede the ABS warning light coming on (with "Faulty ABS System" on text display). Once the ABS light comes on, there is no more beeping. ABS light usually resets next time I start the car - and the beeping starts up again, then maybe a day or 2 later, ABS light comes on again - and repeat!

Any ideas what this noise could be ? Maybe interference or some kind of diagnostic to let an engineer know something is not right with the ABS sensors ? I did make a recording of the sound if anybody wants a listen (not sure what the best way is to make this available to people ?) Frequency is about 4Khz.

Thanks for your help. I plan to take the car into my local garage later this week to have the ABS checked out, but if I can narrow things down that might help them (and my wallet!).

Hi ,
This what I had on my 08 b9 Berlingo, I believe the bleeps just alert you to the fact their is a fault and to look at display.

I also had a intermittent fault on the abs, in my case corrosion had built up behind the front sensors increasing the gap between the sensor and the ring , my garage used a dremmel type tool and ground it back and modified it to close the gap back up.

Yours may be as simple as a faulty sensor but if your garage is struggling it's worth knowing as im told this is a common Citroen Peugeot problem.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the information on the corrosion. I will have a chat with my garage about this.

For the quiet beeping - I did manage to record it, but didn't seem to be able to attach the short MP3 file to my post. When these (quiet) beeps occur, I don't think there is anything being displayed in text and the ABS warning light is off at that point. Just to clarify, I'm not talking about the louder single beep that happens as the ABS warning light comes on and you get the "Failed ABS System" text displayed.

cheers,

adam

Sorry mate I was referring to the single bleep when the warning flags up on the display. Afraid I don't have a clue what the quiet bleeping is .

Our C4 Grand Picasso has the facility to warn you when you exceed a defined speed........Maybe this feature is active on yours ???

As I recall on the C4 its set thro the menu system and can easily be deactivated

I didn't think my Berlingo had a speed warning function (its the fairly basic VTR model), but good suggestion I will dig through the menus on the car to see if there is a setting for that.

I've uploaded the recording of the sound to my SoundCloud page (couldn't seem to attach to posts on this forum) - there's 2 versions, original recording and an enhanced one where I've filtered out lots of the lower frequency rumble and increased the 4KHz region (frequency of the beeping).

Thanks again for the help so far, great forum!

Just in case anybody experiences a similar problem.
I had one of the ABS sensors replaced at my local garage and this appears to have solved the problem. Taken the car on a longer drive today and there was no occurrence of the quiet beeping, so seems likely that it was something related to the ABS - as it always stopped once the ABS warning light came on (with the one off loud warning beep).

If anybody does ever does figure out what that quiet beeping sound was, I would still be interested to know the answer !

I had this problem,  what I think is happening is rust builds up behind the sensor which stops it working as it moves the sensor away from the ring, this causes the ABS to activate and  the ABS valves operate which is the beeping noise you can hear. After this has happen for a few minutes the system shuts down the ABS system so the beeping stops & the ABS warning is displayed.
The solution is to remove the sensor (T30 screw) clean the rust away, I had to chip it away with a screw driver & hammer then put some grease on it to protect it from rusting again, screw it back job done.
