After bouncing from pothole to pothole for ages it seems the road repairs have started in my area.
They have done large patches , not complete roads just the bits they think needs it . Most of the inspectors must be blind !, When I tried to claim for a tyre I was informed as inspector had checked the road 3 weeks earlier and it did not need repairs. The hole I hit was 1.5x 2.5 mtr and 120-150 mm deep. It was a hole in a patch which had been patched 2 times before.
I wonder sometimes if the road menders are ensuring they will have to come back in two or three months as they seem to start repairs in the middle of a pothole and end in the middle of another . Job security ?
On the local roads which are council maintained, after four or five complaints they come and throw a spadeful of tarry stuff into the hole and go away. The patch doesn't last long as its full of stones from the old hole and there is nothing to stop the first rain shower washing it away as the patch is not sealed at the edges.
If its more money they need to repair the roads properly I'd gladly pay a minimum of £100 road tax.

I certainly wouldn't pay any more for road tax ,they take £240 now and I only do about 3000 miles a year, i wonder how much of that goes towards the roads, probably less than what ends up in someone's pension pot. I know something though ,when my berlingo eventually goes tits up I'm off to buy a land rover .

It's a case of wrong priorities.Government, local & national always find money for "pet" schemes but there is none for one of the most important parts of our infrastructure. As for higher road tax,or VED if you prefer, that is not the way to go.After VED,IPT & fuel taxes,we pay our way but the money is put "to better use".We are a 1st world country with 3rd world roads.I believe we need a motorists party to ensure roads etc are maintained to a safe standard.I could bleat on for hours but to protect your sanity I will stop here.

They always say the road was inspected 3 weeks before, do not accept this, require them to produce the evidence.

What they actually did was pass me to their insurance company and they said there was a logbook showing that the road did not require repairs.
With hindsight I should have asked to see it, because about 3 or 4 months later I passed the same bit of road and it had all been resurfaced.
I possibly gave it up as a lost cause too early.!

You have the same ideas as me RON , but I thought that the VED/ road tax was to be ring-fenced for road maintenance. Some chancellor mentioned it, I think or was that a passing cloud?
As for pet projects, these come and go at great expense with no noticeable benefit, John Majors cone hotline was a good example.
