Sounds like the comms unit has worn - you can buy a small plastic plunger or just replace the whole comms unit. Have a look on ebay for both and take your pick.

There was a guy on the forum that repaired comms units but not seen him on here for a while. Have a look on ebay for comms unit repairs and see if he is still doing it.

Do you have to send the comms unit because mine is still on the car.

Yes you remove the comms unit and send it to him. Its fairly easy to remove the only tricky bit is removing the airbag if you have one. It is covered in the manual or there is plenty on the forum about doing it.
You could have a word with these people they may be able to help http://www.bba-reman.com/gb/index.aspx
Ive never used them but a friend used them for an ecu repair and they fixed it.

Ive replaced the plunger myself - done a few of them. Its easy for me to say "its an easy job mate" but im a retired mechanic! So im not able to give you any realistic advise on how easy they are to replace - sorry.

I will tell you the job can be a bit hit and miss because some comms units have more faults than just the plunger - however from the symptoms you describe it does sound like the plunger only at fault.

I will see if I can get a mechanic to do it.
