How to replace glow plugs on M59, 1.6HDi

Hi all,

I just replaced the glow plugs on my car. I am not writing a full description as I made a video of the whole procedure. The link is below. The video is for a Peugeot Partner (a badge difference), 1.6HDi, 92bhp, 9HXC engine, 2007.

If something is not clear, let me know and I can put some more info. Hopefully it will be useful to somebody.

We changed 3 on a friend's car. If you test them for continuity with a light or beeper you can see which ones are not working. and save a bit of work. Just out of interest try connecting them across a battery to see if any heat up.

I had previously changed one of these, because there was not a continuity and Lexia/Peugeot Planet was shoing an error. I suspect all of them were working, as they showed ~1ohm resistance, which is what it should be. I decided to replace them anyway, as they are ~10 years old.
Good suggestion to put them on a battery and see how they glow.

Good video, it's hard to see the glow plugs on the 1.6HDi let alone film the removal of them.

The plugs appeared to come out very easily, when I removed mine they creaked and jerked the whole way out.

In the good old days I also would test a glow plug connecting directly to the 12V battery. I couldn't find a wiring diagram and would imagine that there should only a relay contact in between under normal function. But you should consider that the nominal voltage for the plugs today is only around 5 volt.
  Had to change glow plugs on an A-class Mercedes W169 (250.000 km) (4x BOSCH Glühkerzen Duraterm GLP202 0250403008 Mercedes) and the comparable Denso Glow plug Art.-Nr.: DG-194 has only 4,4 Volt !!

Yeah, it was a bit difficult to put the camera in a good position. The glow plugs did not come out too easy, as you said they were creaking the whole way out. Initially I thought that they had swollen at the tip and I would break them, but tested one old glow plug to see if I can break the tip. It turns out, the end glowing bit is quite tough actually. Seems pretty hard to break.
These were Beru and I bought Bosch as replacement. The Bosch ones are more conical at the tip, so I suppose if I have to take them out it will be easier perhaps.

You read a lot of horror stories of snapped plugs when trying to remove them, I think a lot of the time this is down to people being heavy handed.

As you showed in the video, taking your time and being gentle with the removal is the way to get them out.

What size deep socket is needed for the glow plugs?

The size on mine was 8mm, but some could be 10mm.
