engine warning light, and accompanying beeps

I have a mk 2 berlingo van, and ever since i have bought it, it has had an intermittent orange engine light, which is accompanied by 3 warning beeps, this isn't constant, just occasionally, anyone any ideas as to what could be the cause?

I recall a post a while back concerning an intermittent warning light. It was the brake fluid level that was low and when on a steepish hill it would show a warning - but not on the flat. Might check fluid levels and/or note driving conditions when it lights up. Just a thought.
