Intermittent brakes binding
#1
Guys,

I'm hoping that someone can help before this van drives me mad!
I bought a bargain 2008 Berlingo with an ABS light on the dash (Assuming that it would be an easy fix with new pads or sensor). On driving home the front brakes intermittently jammed on - but I got it home!
Both front callipers replaced - Still the same!
A refurbished ABS module sorted the light and I thought my issue, but lastnight the front brakes started to bind again (both wheels were overheating).

I've read about the amplifier valve? Has anyone got a part number?
What's the most common fix - amplifier valve or master cylinder?

Cheers
Steve.

If when you say "amplifier" do you mean the servo unit . ?. These don't give much trouble , very dependable .
Your problem would more likely to be the master cylinder rather than your servo given the symptoms

Thanks for the response.
I meant the Check Valve on the servo.

Surely it's not rocket science - Master cylinder, Servo, calipers.

Is this an ongoing issue with Berlingos?

Have a check of the rubber brake hoses. They might have collapsed internally making the fluid not return properly. I had this happen on an old transit van. Took a while to work it out

Never heard of anyone else having the problems you mention so it's not an ongoing Berlingo issue. The only time I have had problems with front brakes binding has been down to lack of attention and the sliders getting stuck, never saw flexy hoses break down and block either, just perish and look bad.
So where does this bit go then ?

I had a delaminating clutch flexi pipe twenty five maybe thirty years ago and was first noted when double de-clutching a crash gearbox and that was with a very old flexi of perhaps forty yrs of age.

These days ( for quite some years now ) the flexi pipes are constructed in such a way that it cannot happen any more by using a nylon type tube of arund 3mm diameter surrounded by a rubber outer. The outer can deteriorate / crack but the inner stays good regardless, naturally the mot picks up on the pipe before an issue arises.
