Front end vibration

Just back from our annual drive to Spain. 2500 miles and the car (2014 VTR) was brilliant except for one thing ...... .

I'm getting a vibration from the front end over 70.

I was having problems with it last year as well and before leaving had the wheels balanced and tracking done but it happened again.

This year I had new tyres fitted a month or so before we went and they set the tracking and balanced the wheels.

Yet once on the French motorway it started again at anything over 70. Lovely and smooth up to that speed but awful over it.

Not a worry over here as I rarely manage to get to that speed on our motorways but very annoying in France and Spain.

I wonder whether it may be an aerodynamic issue as it feels a little like the turbulent air I get around my crash helmet on the bike but I've not heard of anyone else with the problem and the dealers seem at a loss to explain it.

Any ideas?

I get that at the same speed on the 2003 2.0 hdi I bought last November. Mine just failed it's MOT on excessive play in worn ball joints on the track rod ends, which might be the problem. Also I'm having new rubber on all four corners and tracking and balancing done all round.

Hopefully this will cure it. I'll post later this month with the results. It doesn't worry me too much as I drive like an old man these days and rarely reach 70mph. :-)

No roof box but it's a good point as I have heard that they can be noisy and subject to vibration.

I don't think it's likely to be worn ball end joints as I started to notice it after just 20k miles and has since passed two MOTs. It is due a full service in July so I'll ask them to check the joints. Like you I rarely get near 70 these days but in France when many of the motorways have an 80 limit and they are empty it seems rude not to take advantage ......

I don't think it's likely to be worn ball end joints as I started to notice it after just 20k miles and has since passed two MOTs. It is due a full service in July so I'll ask them to check the joints. Like you I rarely get near 70 these days but in France when many of the motorways have an 80 limit and they are empty it seems rude not to take advantage ......

Had exactly the same in my 2014 bingo. I put some new alloys on with new tyres and it' smooth as silk now. I' wondering if it's the wheel trims and steel wheels..

Sometimes, the calibration weights on the wheels just fall out, and then you get this vibration because the wheel is no longer calibrated.
It is quite cheaper to calibrate the wheels that buying a new set.
I would try it first.

The wheels were  balanced just before each trip but it seems it made no difference. As I said, it's due a full service next month and I will ask if they can check the balance again.

I have a 2016 1.6HDi Blue Feel which has already done 138K I had an issue start around 70K and I have never been able to solve it. It gets serviced at a Honda dealership where the service manger used to be my Citroen service manager and they look after the car we’ll. it’s been in had all sorts of checks done and best guess is buckled wheels at the moment but the vibration happens around 70 but not under that and then again when I’m breaking down from all speed ranges. I run up and down a lot of poor A and B roads so this is why best guess says buckled wheels plus if you spin them you can see them running in and out as they spin.

Only at speed. The car has now done 38k and I've had it since 5k and it started around 20k.

As I said, it's had the wheels balanced and the tracking done a few times and new tyres just before the last trip and the garage couldn't find any problems.

I hadn't thought about buckled wheels. It's possible as the roads are pretty crap these days and it's difficult to avoid potholes. It's another thing for the dealers to check when it goes for a service in a few weeks.
