A quick update.

At the service I specifically asked them to check the the wheels.

They reckoned every wheel was out of balance and corrected them. Whether my local tyre dealer was wrong or whether balance weights had fallen off I don't know but the car certainly seems a lot better (not that I went at those sorts of speeds where I was getting the problem, of course not)

Thanks for the various ideas and suggestions.

Case closed for the time being.
