[Engine] NEW CAMBELT PROBLEMS.
#1
Hi Folks,
I've just fitted a new cambelt to my 1.9 diesel DW8 engine,
good news is it runs, but it's rather noisy - knocking noise, I locked the Flywheel, Camshaft & Injector Pump & made sure all slack was taken up, I had the Cam & Injector Pump sprockets rotated clockwise as explained in the Haynes manual, something's not quite right, should I take the belt off & start again, or would moving the Injector Pump through its elongated slots make any difference ?

Start again definitely !

Check and double check / read and re read .... don't assume / make assumptions.

Did it knock before ?

Didn't knock before,
was a very smooth motor, the auxillary belt shredded & worked it's way into cambelt,
hence the replacement.
I will take off & try again tomorrow, probably one tooth out on the timing.

Thanks for your reply.

Good luck with it hope it comes good.

At least the 1.9 is a straightforward engine to do a belt on and you'll have all the tools to hand.

When I changed the belt I couldn't find the timing mark on the pump body, so I scribed  a line into the hub & pump body,
now I'm thinking this could be wrong - had the old belt jumped a tooth or more ?
The timing mark/hole for the Camshaft is about a 2 o'clock position, but I'm damned if I can find the one for the injector pump, any help is a lot of help.

The locking pin for the injection pump looks to be around the 1 o'clock position in the diagrams I've seen.

Some diagrams in post # 2 in the link below...

Hi - double check the tensioner on the cambelt. I had a similar sound experience on an 8 valve Escort after replacing the cambelt - turns out I had failed to correctly tighten the belt tensioner and the tension pulley mechanism was moving about under the cover (how the belt never skipped a couple of teeth I'll never know).
