[Engine] Turbo/exhaust heat shield replacement
#1
Hi all,

My turbo/exhaust heat shield has broken off from one of the bolts and is vibrating with some horrible sound. I suspect this is a relatively common fault and it would be great if someone can provide some pointers on how to replace it. I have currently secured the heat shield with heat-resistant steel ties, but from vibrations they brake off every 1-2 months, so I want to replace the rear heat shield (engine-side).

This is for the M59 (2007 1.6HDi, no DPF). As per another thread, I think both parts of the heat shield can be taken out upwards with some wiggling. This will be the easiest option, if possible, as I would not need to remove the exhaust. Here is how it has broken off:

I am a bit uncertain about several points.
Does anything go through the hole in the middle of the rear part (engine-side) of the heat shield (pdf with arrow pointing to the hole)?

I think that the banjo bolt with the oil pipe go around the heat shield, so if I am careful taking it out it should not affect the turbo oil pipe?

My main concern is the two bolts and bracket (number 3 in pdf) that hold the cat/exhaust in place. In order to take the heat shield out I need to undo the two bolts, so the cat/exhaust will be held in place only by the turbo and the rear part of the exhaust. Will this be enough not to drop?

Any other pointers are more than appreciated. Thanks.

Cheers,
saskak

Had a look at mine - that hole is there to fit around one of the nuts sticking out of the engine block. Not really able to held with the other problems. (I have replaced part #15 in your second pdf and the remainder is held to the mountings with jubilee clips - that made the car so much quieter we could hear the dodgy wheel bearing :-(  )

That's great, thank you. I previously also replaced #15, clean break from both mounting points. These aluminium heat thingies are pretty poor design/build.
