Starter motor replacement

Hello, I have a 2008 berlingo 1.6 hdi (9HW) which wont start and as I was reading this problem it seems it's a common problem the battery is ok, fuses are ok so im guessing the starter motor finally died since i had some problems with engine turning over before usualy in winter. 

I removed the air filter and i encountered endless cables and hoses and here is my question since im not a car mechanic and im not too familiar with the anatomy of a car engine, do i need to drain something before uncoupling hoses since im not sure where and if there is any fluid in them.

I read the haynes manual for 2005 berlingo but there it just says on page 221 of pdf to unscrew the thre bolts and remove the starter motor, but on this model acces from below seems impossible

I replaced the SM on my 2005 2.0 HDi (M59) about 6 months ago. I didn't remove the air filter but I did disconnect the upper radiator hose to get easier access to the top bolt of the SM. My model has a hefty bash plate which needed removed to gain access from underneath. The bash plate removal was the worst part of the job as the front speed clips had rusted enough that they spun round but still held the bolts.

Once the bash plate was removed getting the two lower bolts was fairly easy. The SM then had to be twisted and turned to get it out. Wires to the solenoid and SM also had to be unscrewed.

Thank you iamtoo, i too removed the radiator hose and managed to get acces to the bolts.
The SM is completely destroyed.

Sorry to hear. At least you know what caused your starting problem.

I got an uprated SM for about £55 delivered, which wasn't too bad. Got it from a well known online auction site.

16v one paul ? right down the back and a mission to access, i jacked my offside very high so that i could reach from above and below ok

Yes The 16v one ive been told they are not easy to access would i be better of letting a garage do it or if i jack it up really high will it be easy enough to get to have done most mechanical jobs myself over the years so am mechanically minded!

you should be fine jacking it high (offside wheels 2ft off the ground) means you can reach over the nearside wing and down by the driveshaft easily, and also from below, they were allen key bolts, so a 1/4 drive rachet and wobbly extensions are a big help, and luckily mine had already been changed at some point, so the hardest to get 3rd bolt had been thrown in the bin
