Berlingo starting problem
#11
Are they expensive/ is it an expensive job to do?
I took the boot panel off and sprayed around with wd40, worked for a day then went back to the same.

Jumping to another subject, at what revs should it tick over at? Seems high to me,stays at 1000 all the time, can i turn it back a little or is that about the norm???
Thanks for the help peeps

glow plugs can be purchased on ebay from £12.00 so cheap probably best to get a decent sent tho

thk 1000 is norm

If its white smoke that's unburt diesel fuel, then it is certainly the glow plugs not preheating the fuel hence the white smoke when eventually it starts
As already said their quite cheap to buy online and not that difficult to fit if you have long reach small socket set

ebay glowplugs are usually wellman brand and as such, I'd not touch them after buying a set and one was faulty straight out the pack. Gave me massive problems and much stress until i figured that out. Ok, so the motor is a 1.5 litre TUD in a 106 that has got 178,000 under it's belts but I'd really rather pay more for the part and have it work properly than be cheap and not solve the problem i bought them to..

tick over on my dw8 is around 1100 cold dropping to just under a grand when warmed up..

if changing the glowplugs, I always heat the motor up by going for a drive first. makes it much easier to undo them and less liable to crack the threads open when undoing (expansion/contraction etc)

thanks guys, it is white smoke that appears on start up. Will change the glow plugs and see if that sorts it.

This should shed some light on on the subject.
This is the info for a Bosch ecu but I would expect it to be the same for others.

the cable from the waxstat to the pump cold start lever needs to work as well, oh and the zero degrees thing is an urban myth - the glow plugs work all the time with the on-time determined by engine coolant temperature, above 50deg C they briefly flash for a split second but below that they always come on for a noticeable time.

The cold start cable pulls a little lever to the left end of the pump, it moves right about half an inch and the engine would then run smoothly when cold, check its over to the right when the engine is cold otherwise the mechanism that pulls it is broken, or the cable itself. (below the throttle cable) - if it doesnt move then you get lumpy running and white smoke.

You can jam a pound coin in the gap after pushing the lever to the right with a screwdriver, then putting the coin in the gap created on the left of the lever and it should start and run smoothly, but the revs will stay at 1100 once warm, and fuel consumption will suffer, if left there.
