Dodgy CD selection

Has anyone come across this problem?
My B9,'65 reg,has intermittent CD play selection problems.
I start car & it defaults to radio.This lasts a few days & then behaves itself.Even trying to select CD play,it will revert to radio.
Wierd or what?
hoping one of you wizards can help.

I'm reluctant to change the radio unit as it controls the panel settings & knowing my luck the car will self destruct if I do.
I'm using a gizmo my son gave me which tunes into the radio & has so many songs that I don't need the CD player.
Bloody modern technology is a bum pain.
