[Warning Light] mot fail cheat.
#1
just put my multispace 2004 through the mot,it failed on an airbag light
so tried a few of the usual checks wiring under seats etc  but no joy
so asked a mechanic friend and he told me that if it doesent light up it cant fail
so covered up the bulb, back in for mot and it passed as an advisory.

HI  i removed the console cover, undo one screw
remove glass from dash, the lights on dash circuit board
are fixed so covered the hole that it shines through.

I thought they had to check the light came on as a check when ignition switched on, then switched off when the engine was running. Pretty obvious if you have airbags.
I dont think I would be covering an airbag fault light. I think I would be find out what is wrong with it.

Hi Malcolm
they do have to check that the light is on with ignition and off when running
if it stays on its a fail ,if it doesent light at all its an advisory and a pass.
the car should be failed because of a fault in the airbag system not because a light came on
because obviously the light is doing its job correctly .i now can still use the car while i investigate the fault.

That's called hiding the symptoms without fixing the fault.

The Mot test is there for a purpose.
It helps keep all road users safe.
Cheating instead of accepting that there is a fault and getting it fixed goes against the reason for the test.

Whenever mine does it it's the connector under the driver seat, I unplug it and give it a squirt of cleaner then put it back together and it works properly.
So where does this bit go then ?

When mine came on diagnostics said drivers side. Did all the usual stuff without success. Was ready for MOt failure next year, the suddenly thought, drivers side! French!. Put my hand under passenger seat, found socket, CLICK!!! No more air bag warning light.

Worth remembering, that.

I recently changed a yaw rate sensor on a Merc. I stripped out the drivers seat, door lower trim holding the carpet, and carpet itself, because the sensor was bolted to the metal floor under the drivers seat. No sensor!

Merc had written their workshop instructions for the American market - so I had to do the same exercise a second time on the 'passenger' side!
